Hummingbirds in Winter!

Yes, it's true!  The Anna's Hummingbird has been frequenting our back yard hummingbird feeders for years and last year's inclimate weather brought droves of hummngbirds to our feeders.  We received hundreds of phone calls last year from people sighting the Anna's Hummingbird, worried that it was a hummingbird that forgot to migrate!

The Anna's Hummingbird survives the cold winters here in British Columbia by eating insects, insect larvae and nectar from winter blooms and humminbird feeders.

This year, more people are keeping their hummingbird feeders full and attracting more of the Anna's now that the Rufous Hummingbird has flown south for the season.

Creative solution to keep the hummingbird nectar from freezing!

How to keep the Hummingbird Feeder from freezing?

- Have two feeders - one inside to replace the frozen one and just keep changing the feeders

-hang your feeder above or near an outdoor light (light that gives off some heat)

-tape "hot pocket" to bottom of feeder

-hang above bird bath heater

-wrap a sock around it!

Nectar Recipe

Mix 4 parts water with 1 part sugar and bring to boil on stove or microwave (until solution is clear).  Cool before filling feeder.

Fill with fresh nectar solution every 3 to 5 days.

If the temperature outside cools to near freezing, you can strengthen the nectar to a ratio of 3:1.
