The Need for Introductions

"Little Johnny and Janey, meet Nature."

"Nature, meet Little Johnny and Janey."

Today's youth spend less time outside than any previous generation, depriving themselves of the emotional and physical benefits. It's a trend that we would like to see reversed.

Boy filling feeder Well, here's a simple activity you can do with a child to introduce, or reintroduce, them to old Mother Nature. It focuses on finding out what foods your backyard birds favor, by hosting a special feast.

All you need is several identical bowls, some different kinds of seed, mealworms, some soft fruit like a banana or strawberry, water soaked oats, breadcrumbs and any other food you'd like to try as an offering.

Just locate a place in your yard that is close to bushes or overhanging trees. Then set the bowls in a row, placing different food in each one. Finally, watch your feathered guests chow down from indoors or from an outside hideaway, and note what food each bird eats.

You and your kids will be amazed at how picky, and how not-so-picky, some birds are.

(Warning: Make sure your feast is out of reach of predators like cats, and clear away your feast before dark - leftovers can attract unwelcome guests.)

We'd love to help you introduce the children you care about to the nature we all care about. Stop by the store this month if you're looking for something to offer at your bird buffet; our birdfood the best in town!
